The Effect of Restricting Access to Lethal Methods for Suicide: a Study of Suicide by Domestic Gas in Japan

Data from Japan from 1969-82 indicated that, as domestic gas was detoxified, its use for suicide declined. In addition, there was no evidence that would-be suicides switched to alternative methods. The results were interpreted as support for a recent suggestion that preventing access to lethal methods may prevent suicide.

The Effects of Detoxification of Domestic Gas on Suicide in the United States

As domestic gas was detoxified in the U.S., the rate of suicide by domestic gas decreased. From 1950-60, there was a parallel increase in the per capita ownership of cars & an accompanying increase in the rate of suicide by motor vehicle exhaust. Displacement of suicidal method from domestic gas to car exhaust occurred only […]

Was Gas Detoxification or Establishment of Suicide Prevention Centers Responsible for the Decline in the British Suicide Rate?

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning and Cars: on Modification of Opportunities for Suicide

Aiming at reducing the risks for fatal outcomes of poisoning, carbon monoxide poisonings were analyzed. Swedish statistics from 1978-87 were given. Tubing of car exhausts into passenger car compartments by suicidal intent was the main cause. Increased CO oxidizing capacity of car catalysts, exhaust pipes incompatible with tubes & automatic stop of idling dependent on […]

Gun Control: AAS & Political Activism

The author discusses the evidence indicating that restricting access to methods for suicide reduces the rate of suicide by that method (e.g. detoxification of domestic gas in Great Britain) & may reduce the overall rate. Since guns are the most common method of suicide in the USA, he calls on suicidologists to support those organizations […]

A Century of Suicide in Ireland

Suicide rates in Ireland over the last century are examined in 6 quinquennial groups from 1864 to the present. Broad trends include an overall decline for both sexes in the past 25 years with a higher decline for males, declining rates for the elderly & an increase in males ages 15 to 24. Rural suicide […]

Propane Asphyxiation

The deceased was an 81-year-old white male with a history of suicidal tendencies. After the death of his wife he made several different suicide attempts using various methods. He was finally successful using “utility gas” from the stove. Characteristics of the gas and its physiological effects are given. 58 refs.

To Die Or Not To Die

The author suggests that although the detoxification of domestic gas may contribute to less completed suicides, the increase in attempted suicide by self poisoning suggests that suicidal persons are using different methods that happen to be more conducive to treatment. Other factors influencing statistics are the work of the Samaritans in prevention & disagreement on […]

Recent Trend of Suicide in Japan, An Epidemiology Study

Male & female suicide rates in Japan peaked in the mid 1950’s & then decreased by the middle 1960’s. Rates then increased again, particularly for males, while female suicide has desreased. This phenomenon appears to be a reflection of Western culture & Japan’s current economic situation. Children’s suicide & related aggressive behaviors are also increasing […]

Death Resulting From Gasoline “Sniffing”: A Case Report

This communication concerns the death of a young man due to deliberate inhalation of gasoline vapours. The presence of gasoline in the liver of the victim was demonstrated by headspace gas chromatography. The possible mechanism of death due to rapid inhalation of gasoline vapours is discussed.

Failed Suicide Attempt by Emission Gas Poisoning

This article presents the case of a 31-year-old male who survived a suicide attempt involving prolonged exposure to emission gases from his car, probably because of the low levels of CO produced by newer cars. At a 10-month follow-up, he was free of the sequelae characteristic of CO poisoning. A reduction of fatalities is predicted […]

Le Dessin, Mode Ultime D’Expression au Cours D’un Suicide (The Pattern: Ultimate Mode of Expression During a Suicide)

In an exceptional record left by an adolescent girl who committed suicide with gas, verbal & plastic expression alternate but, finally the thymic modifications induced by carbon monoxide, preference is given to plastic expression. This record dramatically evidences the rational analytical & informative character of the written communication as opposed to the more direct, total […]

Suicide, Unemployment, and Domestic Gas Detoxification in Britain

Between 1962 and 1971 the United Kingdom suicide rate fell while the unemployment rate rose, contrary both to earlier British experience & recent trends in other developed countries. It is hypothesized that the “British anomaly” is due to the coincident detoxification of domestic gas after 1963. Unemployment & suicide by means other than domestic gas […]
