Suicide rates in Ireland over the last century are examined in 6 quinquennial groups from 1864 to the present. Broad trends include an overall decline for both sexes in the past 25 years with a higher decline for males, declining rates for the elderly & an increase in males ages 15 to 24. Rural suicide rates are higher than urban, increasing with age & for males. Death by poisoning has increased & is examined in detail. The effect of warfare & homicide rates are also noted.
