This coming Saturday, September 10, is World Suicide Prevention Day, a day to remember those we’ve lost to suicide and raise awareness for its prevention.

September is also Recovery Month – there are links between suicide and substance use disorder.

People who are experiencing a mental illness may use drug or alcohol to cope with their symptoms, which can lead to substance use disorder. Risk of suicide increases if a person has substance use disorder in addition to another mental illness.

Our latest blog, ‘Substance use, recovery, and suicide prevention,’ done in collaboration with Canadian Mental Health Association – National, explains how suicide can be prevented among people with substance use disorder.
