Suicide is an unpredictable act, but in some cases it is preventable, particularly when steps are taken to reduce risk. Emergency nurses are poised to identify high-risk populations and employ suicide preventive interventions, which can be accomplished by recognizing personal responses and quickly establishing therapeutic relationships. Therapeutic relationships enable the nurse to provide immediate emotional support, ensure medical clearance, perform a suicide risk assessment, strengthen protective factors, formulate an effective suicide safety plan, and avert suicide. This article has delineated salient clinical points that can sharpen and bolster confidence in emergency nurses and help them use sound clinical judgment when they encounter a patient in crisis.
