36 of 157 students deaths at the University of Cambridge during the academic years 1970-1996 appeared to be suicides. The overall suicide rate was 11.3 per 100,000 person years at risk. Rates were similar to those seen amongst 15-24-year-olds in the general popluation. There were nonsignifcant trends for male postgraduates to be over-represented & first-year undergraduates to be under-represented. Examination times were not associated with excess suicide. It is concluded suicide rates in University of Cambridge students do not appear to be unduly high. (10 refs.) JA
