This article outlines telephone service & internet initiatives to combat the high prevalence of depression, attempted suicide, & completed suicide existing in Australia in the late 1990s. Private medical practitioners & a private businessman established a heavily used telephone service designed to attract male callers. Subsequently, two websites were initiated. The article gives an overview of the suicide prevention messages used & the pattern of calls & internet hits. (14 ref.) JA
