This report summarizes results from the 2009 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance national survey, 42 state surveys, & 20 local surveys conducted among students in Grades 9-12. With respect to sucide, nationwide, 13.8 percent of students (17.4% of females; 10.5% of males) had seriously considered attempting suicide during the 12 months before the survey. 10.9% of students nationwide had made a plan about how they would attempt suicide, & 6.3% of students had attempted suicide one or more times during the 12 months before the survey. 1.9% of students nationwide had made a suicide attempt that had to be treated by a doctor or nurse.
