Little is known about the numbers & characteristics of people who travel away from home before dying by suicide. This study attempts to identify the sociodemographic characteristics, location, & method of suicide in people who died distant from home. Data were collected on all English suicides & a patient population; nonresident suicides lived in one Health Authority but died in a different one. 12 percent of suicides were nonresident & features of these included: young age, social adversity, & severe mental illness. Both individual- & area-based factors are likely to contribute to suicide away from home. (17 refs.) JA
