A random sample of 697 licensed social workers in Ohio was surveyed regarding client firearm assessment & safety counselling. Analyses sought to determine what independent factors would predict the probability that a social worker would hold positive attitudes regarding firearm risk assessment & counselling. Findings indicated that prior training & reporting from an urban area significantly increased the odds of registering more positive attitudes toward firearm assessment & safety by 91.1% & 44.7%, respectively. Training mental health professionals in firearm assessment & safety counselling is an important aspect in addressing the reduction of suicides by this means. (38 refs.)
