This study measured hopelessness & hopefulness in Pakistani adolescents. Translated versions (into Urdu) of the Beck Hopelessness Scale & the Life Orientation Test were administered to 723 adolescents & young adults. For the Urdu Beck Hopelessness Scale, all item-total correlation coefficients were significant & yielded a single component. The principal component analysis on the Urdu Life Orientation Test yielded 2 components representing positively worded optimism items & negatively worded pessimism items. The Beck Hopelessness Scale, as well as the 2 subscales of the Life Orientation Test, were found to be predictive of suicide ideation. Both scales are established for use with young Pakistanis.
