This article reviews the literature to see if patient suicide can be predicted & prevented; attempts to identify high-risk patients through demographics, diagnoses, medication treatments, & patient social situations; & examines the care-delivery environment such as length of stay & physical surroundings. Methods of suicide & the time during hospitalization when suicide occurs is also examined. The effect of patient suicide on care providers & postvention strategies are also discussed. (48 refs.)
