Data on American Indian and Alaska Native suicide & homicide indicate that violence is a particular threat to this population. While homicide & suicide rates have decreased among American Indians & Alaska Natives since 1972-1974, their rates are still higher than those for the total American population. This article provides statistics on homicide & suicide death rates for American Indian & Alaska Natives. These rates are also shown by Indian Health Service areas. Some violence & suicide prevention programs are highlighted.
