This presentation discussed a participant observation study done in the emergency department of the Toronto General Hospital. The purpose of the research was to determine how parasuicidal patients were perceived & treated by staff. Results indicated self-harm patients received prompt medical attention but faced largely unempathic care by many of the emergency room staff. Programs designed to increase psychosocial awareness of the care of these patients & provide educational opportunities regarding self-harm care were discussed.
