Suicide rates in Norway roughly doubled from the end of the 1960s to the late 1980s. As a consequence of this increase, the Norwegian Parliament decided to launch a suicide prevention plan running from 1994-1999, later prolonged for another 3 years. Experiences, results, & further challenges in establishing & running a national suicide prevention programme are discussed in this article. (3 refs.)
