The lifetime prevalence rates of suicide ideation, plans, & attempts were established & the conditional risks of suicide attempts following the prior onset of suicide ideation or planning were identified. A representative sample of Israeli residents, aged 21 or older, were interviewed between May 2003-April 2004. The final sample included 4,859 respondents. About 5.5% of adults reported they have thought of suicide, & 1.4% that they have attempted suicide in their lifetime. The year following the onset of ideation constitutes the year of highest risk for suicide attempts. The risk of sucide attempt was highest among individuals with mental disorders. The youngest age group had the highest odds of suicide attempts & the highest odds of impulsive suicide attempts. (11 refs.)
