Taking Antidepressant During Late Pregnancy: how Should we Advise Women?

The question is asked as to what physicians should advise women who want to discontinue or are considering discontinuing their antidepressant medications in late pregnancy. Negative media reports about the side effects of antidepressants on mothers & babies & a Health Canada advisory have raised concerns. However, the authors advise considering the risks, including postpartum depression & suicide ideation & behaviours, of untreated depression & discontinuing medications. (15 refs.)
