This study examined selected risk & protective factors among a large group of high school adolescents who had previously attempted suicide. 506 adolescents were divided into 4 groups: past single attempt; recent single attempt; past multiple attempts; & recent multiple attempts. Depression, anxiety, hopelessness, & anger as well as drug use & consequences were examined. Family support, school bonding, social support from peers, & coping skills were studied. Depression, anxiety & hopelessness levels in the past multiple attempts group were significantly higher than those in the past single attempt group. Unexpectedly, no differences were found among the groups on protective factors. (23 refs.)
