This study reports the case of a 13-year-old female of mixed Latino & European-American heritage who was admitted for long-term inpatient psychiatric care. Clinicians assessed how issues of cultural identity were affecting the patient’s developmental progress; results were incorporated into a general treatment program. The inpatient multidisciplinary team attended to the evolution & integration of a positive self-view – which included attention to culturally transmitted systems of norms, meanings, & values central to identify formation – by helping the patient discover positive & empowering elements of her heritage.
