In this letter to the editor, Catty comments on Preti & Miotto’s paper on suicide in classical mythology. Her concern lies with the treatment of the central text as a “rather unusual case-series of completed suicides”. She believes this reading ignores the historical specificity of the periods in which the book & fables originate as well as assuming an unproblematic correspondence between representation & historical circumstance.
