This paper evaluates the contribution of Maytree to suicide prevention. Maytree is an innovative project offering a respite centre for the suicidal. The first 3 years of operation are reviewed, the way in which the program works is explored, & its effects on people who use the service are examined. It is concluded Maytree complements mainstream statutory services & challenges the values & frameworks of statutory provision in the field of suicide prevention. (9 refs.)
