Baseline data were collected for a distinct validation cohort of 2541 participants from 14 US regional centres to confirm & extend preliminary findings that those with major depressive disorder in primary & speciality care settings have equivalent degrees of depression & an indistinguishable constellation of symptoms. Both primary & specialty care participants showed considerable suicide risk with specialty care participants even more likely to report prior suicide attempts. Both groups of participants had identical levels of moderately severe depression. (63 refs.)
