In this letter to the editor, Theunissen comments on a study by Andover et al (2005) on the relationship between self-mutilation, depression, & anxiety. Theunissen discusses the importance of always considering the presence of personality disorder in cases of self-mutilation, specificity versus generality of affect dysregulation in self-mutilation; the functional significance of self-harming behaviour; & therapies for self-harming behaviour.
