This study examined how previously suicidal adolescents & emerging aduls perceived their emotional experiences while being suicidal. 41 females & 9 males previously suicidal between the ages of 15-24 were interviewed. Qualitative data were analyzed using a grounded theory approach. 3 major themes were identified: overwhelming despair; shame & self-loathing; & alienation & personal isolation. These emotional states were viewed within the multidimensional process of responding to emotions. Participants’ inability to deal with intense negative emotions appeared to be related to their suicidal state. (63 refs.)
