A random sample of 253 Brazilian patients, age 18 & older, admitted to surgical & clinical wards, was assessed using the Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview to estimate the proportion at risk of dying by suicide. 58 patients were found to be at risk of suicide, 13 of whom presented a high risk. Risk was greater in young adult patients, those with no matrimonial relationship, & those diagnosed with major depression. It is concluded young adults should receive special attention when admitted to general hospitals because of their potential for suicide. (14 refs.)
