In this paper, the author examines other cultures & religions & their attitude toward suicide. Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, & the teachings of Confucius are discussed. Suicide throughout Japanese history is described. The claim that suicide did not occur in “primitive” cultures is examined & examples refuting this belief are provided. Retterstol concludes there are many indications developing countries are entering a period of increasing suicide rates.
