In this letter to the editor, the author comments on an article by Krysinska & Lester (2006) on the Werther effect in Japan. Andriessen discusses other research on this phenomenon in Japan in the 1930s as well as the absence of the Werther effect after the first performances of Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet”. (6 refs.)
