This press release outlines the 1994 position of the Australian Press Council on reporting suicide. It was the belief of the Council that it was not possible to draw up sufficiently precise guidelines to deal with all potential situations. Instead, the Council stated its preference to rely on the continuining responsible attitude of the press. The Council did support a suggestion by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists to include information on counselling services for young people in distress in stories about suicide.
