This report describes the analysis of violent deaths from 7 states that participated in the National Violent Death Reporting System in 2003, plus 6 additional states that participated in 2004. Suicide circumstance information indicated mental health disorders & intimate partner problems had important roles. The age-adjusted suicide rate for the 7 states collecting data in 2003 & 2004 decreased from 9.7 per 100,000 population in 2003 to 9.1 in 2004. In these states, the 2004 age-adjusted rate for males was more than four times higher than that for females. Overall in 2004, the highest suicide rates were among persons aged 35 years or older.
