Since 1997, when the number of suicides peaked in Australia, there has been a sustained reduction in the number of suicides each subsequent year. This editorial reviews some of the reasons for the decline but notes they do not provide grounds for complacency. Goldney recommends continuing vigilance, & acknowledgement & acceptance of the role of medical professionals, particularly, general practitioners, in identifying & treating mental disorders, particularly depression, associated with suicide.
