The risk factors & criteria related to suicidal behaviours were studied in sample of emergency ward patients in Iran during 9 months of 1997-1998. Females were more prone to suicide & made attempts at a younger age. Females used drugs more often than males. Family discord was the most common cause of suicide in both genders, although more so among females. Attempted suicide because of financial & occupational problems was limited to males. The most common educational level in this population was up to the 8th grade. (16 refs.)
