In a retrospective study of 69 elderly (65 years & older) cases of attempted suicide in southern Sydney, 81% took overdoses. Depressive illness was present in 87% of cases. Multiple psychosocial, psychological, medical, & psychiatric risk factors for suicide were identified. Major functional psychiatric disorders were found predominantly in females & were associated with higher levels of suicide intent, psychosis, & fewer chronic illnesses. Minor functional disorders were associated with lower degrees of suicide intent, personality dysfunction, & higher numbers of psychosocial stressors. Findings indicate several patterns of suicidal behaviours in the elderly. (14 refs.)
