Almost 6,000 people died by suicide in the United Kingdom in 2004. While suicide rates fell between 1991 & 2004, this decrease did not occur in all areas of the nation. Large disparities remain between suicide rates in the countries comprising the United Kingdom & between regions & local areas. This article also presents inequalities in suicide rates by deprivation, & considers changes over time, for men & women, & for different age groups. (16 refs.)
