Sayt K’uulm Goot – of one Heart: Preventing Aboriginal Youth Suicide Through Youth and Community Engagement
Child and Youth Officer for British Columbia
This report documents the inter-nation forum & policy round table on Aboriginal youth suicide that took place in Prince Rupert in May 2005. It includes recommendations & advice to the provincial government on how British Columbia can help prevent Aboriginal youth suicide by involving communities & youth directly in prevention efforts. Some key considerations include: programming that is locally initiated, owned, accountable, & that reflects the norms & values of the local First Nations culture; suicide prevention as the responsibility of the entire community; & focussing on the behaviour patterns of child & youth up to age 20.
