The author reflects on the moral uncertainty that was exposed regarding acts of dying & responding acts of caring in response to the article “It’s Over Debbie” published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (1988). Vaux reviews different types of euthanasia – passive, double-effect, & active. He concludes that the greatest moral problem of care for the dying is not doctors’ effecting euthanasia or prolonging suffering but society not knowing how or when terminal patients should receive death.
