This study examined the potential impact of recovery from substance abuse disorder (SUD) on the course of bipolar disorder among patients diagnosed with both bipolar & substance abuse disorders according to DSM-IV criteria. The first 1000 patients to enter the Systematic Treatment Enhancement Program for Bipolar Disorder were examined on their bipolar disorder status, role functioning, & quality of life. Patients with no history of SUD, current SUD, & past SUD were compared. Data were collected between November 1999 & April 2001. (LC) (34 refs)
