This article discusses how suicidal behaviour has traditionally been seen in a medical context, however, in this article it is viewed as an action theory in which human behaviour is intentional, goal-directed, & planned. The action theory approach is based on the assumption that we all have goals, which direct our actions. A new model of suicidal behaviour may help health professionals to improve their understanding of suicidal patients & lead to more effective prevention strategies. (LC)
