The authors attempt to sketch a portrait of how death-related issues are met with & addressed in the United States. The chapter features: 1) an opening survey of encounters with death, attitudes toward death, & selected death-related practices that are typical or characteristic in the U.S.; 2) a discussion of issues related to coping with dying & helping those who are coping with dying; 3) an analysis of issues related to coping with loss, grief, & bereavement, as well as helping bereaved persons; & 4) some comments about a series of selected special issues (including suicide, homicide, assisted suicide, & euthanasia).
