The authors reviewed the research literature from the last 30 years in order to determine whether there is evidence for an association between media portrayal of suicide & actual suicide. Their findings demonstrate that, particularly with regard to non-fictional media portrayals, a causal association likely exists between suicide in the media & actual suicide. Implications for both media & mental health professionals are discussed. (184 refs)
