This study was conducted to identify the personal & social circumstances that lead people living in New Brunswick to attempt & complete suicide. In a sample of 102 completed suicides between April 2002 & May 2003, the large majority of victims had a long history of mental health difficulties. Two-thirds had long-standing addiction problems. Major difficulties in treating persons with multiple problems are noted & recommendations to improve current clinical practice are made. The authors report that in general, members of the public can clearly recognize signs of distress & suicidal behaviours, but for many, getting a friend or family member to appropriate services has not yet become a natural response.
