This report presents the findings from research commissioned by the Ministry of Youth Development to determine support needs of families, whanau & significant others (FWSO) affected by a suicide attempt. The findings suggest that the effects of suicide attempts on others are compounded by systemic deficiencies that currently exist within the Mental Health system in New Zealand. The authors found that the greatest issue facing FWSO bereaved by suicide is the need for respite from the ongoing care needs of family members who have attempted suicide.
