The author reports on the awarding of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s 1997 research award to M M Linehan for her work in establishing the Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT) model for use with chronically suicidal individuals suffering from borderline personality disorder (BPD). The highlights of a lecture given by Linehan before accepting her award are reviewed. (7 refs)
