The author uses examples (based on testimony by physicians) from the Netherlands to demonstrate how the legalization of physician-assisted suicide & euthanasia inevitably leads to abuses including the compromise of patient autonomy & voluntary choice, the failure to present or examine alternatives for end-of-life care, & the bypassing of criteria for unrelievable suffering. He identifies similar problems that have arisen in Oregon, arguing that physicians in that state have been given authority without being in a position to exercise it responsibly.
