In this article, the author discusses major depression among people with HIV disease. Barriers to diagnosis, incidence, etiology, screening, & treatment of major depression are also described. The need for proper monitoring of suicide risk among depressed HIV patients is addressed, along with the myth that suicide is an understandable choice for persons with HIV disease. The author emphasizes the potential for improving quality of life through the treatment of depression. Case studies illustrate typical depressed patients with HIV.
