This article discusses issues relating to the mental health of prisoners in England & Wales. It begins with a brief overview of the prison population & then examines the levels of psychiatric disorder, substance misuse, self-harm, & suicide found among prisoners. The second half of the article concentrates on imprisonment & mental health, focusing on what happens to people when they are imprisoned & the facilities provided for them in custody. (6 refs)
