Psychological Dimensions Associated With Suicidal Ideation and Attempts in the National Comorbidity Survey

Neuroticism, self-criticism, & hopelessness were examined in relation to suicidal ideation & attempts in the U.S. National Comorbidity Survey after controlling for other variables. Analyses were conducted separately for lifetime, current, & past history of suicidal ideation & attempts. Brief indices of self-criticism & hopelessness were robustly associated with suicide attempts across all 3 time frames. The implications of these findings for psychological assessment in the general population are discussed. (34 refs)
