Patterns and Correlates of Substance use Amongst Juvenile Detainees in New South Wales 1989-99

The authors studied patterns & correlates of alcohol & drug use among incarcerated adolescents in new South Wales, Australia. Structured interviews obtained the following information: 1) demographic characteristics; 2) general health, depression, suicidal behavior, legal history, family history of violence & substance use; 3) drug & alcohol history, treatment need & help-seeking; & 4) HIV risk behavior. High levels of negative health & psychosocial consequences of substance use included overdose, depression, & suicidal behaviors. Further findings are discussed. (24 refs)
