This study assessed the rates & patterns of suicidal ideation & behavior among 1272 women in U.S. jails. Overall, 53.7% reported suicidal ideation or suicidal behavior at some point in their lifetime. Non-Hispanic Whites were more likely than Hispanics to report thoughts of death, & more likely than African Americans to report wanting to die, thoughts of suicide, & previous suicide attempts. The authors discuss implications for research & the criminal justice system. (59 refs)
