The objective of this report is to provide an overview of suicide in the United States & in Indiana. To counteract the problem of unreported suicides, the authors seek to improve the quality of data collection at local, state, & national levels. Statistics are presented covering mortality data from years 1999 through 2001. A brief summary of suicide-related hospitalizations based on hospital discharge data for the first 6 months of 2002 is also provided. Prevention strategies are briefly discussed. (8 refs)
