This chapter reviews the social experiment that occurred during 1996-1997, when for a period of nine months euthanasia was legalized within the Northern Territory of Australia. The author looks especially at the clinical histories & decision-making processes involved for 7 patients who participated (2 men & 2 women died making use of this legislation, while 3 others attempted to but died from other causes). He also explores the role & effect of the relevant legislation, & the sociopolitical climate in which it evolved.
