The author discusses the relationship between depression, suicide, & schizophrenia. The difficulties of diagnosing depression in patients with schizophrenia, & of distinguishing between schizoaffective disorder & secondary depression are highlighted. The high risk for suicide is also emphasized. Recent research concerning effective treatment of depression & suicidal ideation in schizophrenic patients is reviewed, & suggestions for future research are posed. (23 refs)
